podcasting

Let's work together to understand podcasting. Our demo in class finally worked, thanks to Hamilton catching the missing ".rss" at the end of the file. By editing the feed in Text Edit, we accidentally created a ".txt" file.
So, now that everything was up and running, I had to accidentally destroy it.
Well, this is how we learn. - Craig

I have managed to mix this up completely. My new feed is up and working at feedburner, but the chicklet points to the wrong address. Hmmm, I checked the code for the chicklet, and don't see the problem.

Holy Macarel! I got it working. For the longest time, the podcast was showing up fine at the Feedburner site, but the chicklet on the blog page was looking for Grc_multimedia on the server. I kept looking in the code for the feed, and the rss, but never found those words. SO, I re-burned the feed again, and this time I changed the part of the feedburner address that I was allowed to adjust. I just wrote /craigpgrafix
after the regular address. This became..
http://feeds.feedburner.com/craigpgrafix

I think part of the problem is in trying to communicate with an outsider, you All need is to keep it SIMPLE! I got into the blog space and there are twenty things to click on or do or consider doing or should have done, or might try one more time and after slashing around I have gotten someplace that actually locks up the machine, Windows puts up the ubiquitus message "the program is not responding" and phoof it retires. Crap, I say, why should I ever go back? Well, Craig is an aquaintance and so I should at least try. The second time in I get to the blog page and everthing looks similar but is different. The 'comments' that were on the first version arn't there any more and I have to, once again, slash around to find where I can write this dribble.

All in all the page looks pro enough, but crime'n'nentlies keep IT SIMPLE. AM I YELLING LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOU TO HEAR. It would be nice to have a simple link to the podcast rather than a do this or do that drop down suscribe link, put that stuff on a seperate page... so this time when I try to down load the podcast I get nowhere. I expect I will have to go and get a MP3 reader or whatever you nerds call it. You folks who swim around in this stuff all day gotta' remember that the rest of us who mostly don't give a rip will give up in a heart beat if it doesn't work; be simple, be smooth and within three mouse clicks to the answer. As I remember the London Times survey found you have less than 3.5 seconds to get and keep someone's attention, which means IMMEADIATE download and open(eliminate the need for download bars), and less than 4 mouse clicks to provide the answer for what someone is looking for. So, I will be back later to give this a third try. In the mean time, for the folks like Craig will become in about 9 years, make the type size just a little bit bigger.

Hi Mike,
What can I say, computer curmudgeons abound in Montana? I sent you to the blog using the Multimedia class assignment page. That is currently the only link for it, as this is a new item. Once the bugs, wrinkles, and sawdust are all gone, the link will be prominently posted on one of the main site pages.
I assume that part of your problem was that you had to use a password to get into the multimedia web site.

By way of simplifying...you could get to this location (the blog) by
entering this address into your browser:

craigpgrafix.blogspot.com

That takes you DIRECTLY here. You do not have to type in http, or www...just the address listed above.

General opinion is that the type is just a fine old size. One person said you are blind. (hmmmm...)
On our monitors it is the equivalent of 12pt. size on a sheet of paper. Are you using a really high resolution on your screen these days?

You will need a podcatcher to subscribe to the podcast. That is most likely going to be Itunes, as it has captured the market share. This has nothing to do with owning an ipod. Most people play podcasts on their computer.

The subscribe button allows you to choose other podcatchers (aggregators) for your pleasure.

I can/will put a link to the file for historical purposes in the near future. Once the podcasting begins, it is nice to be able to go back to previous episodes. The .rss feed will send you the new ones, but your podcatcher will store the old ones. If a new subcriber comes on board, they might want to hear previous episodes....hence the link.

Regarding the computer lock-up....
It works on pc/mac at school and home. Is your computer up to date?
I'm talking about software updates.

Ummm, that might include the Itunes update as well as os updates.

That's about all for now. Catch you soon,
Craig

One more thought in response to Mike.
Did I mention you live in Montana?

The disappearing information was probably when I was playing around with blogger and feed burner. I made a lot of changes in one evening.
Timing is everything. Just ask the tumbleweeds.

What, none of you kids got opinions? I though for sure that someone would take a shot at me. Ha! then. Stop, stop don’t reach for the keyboard now. You had your chance.

So, let me explain. First, Craig and I go back a bit of a distance. From the beginning we have had differences of opinion. A couple divergences nearly came to blows, but we worked that out, deciding on a good cop/bad cop program. You know who is who. And until my dying days I will never understand what Craig sees in Shelly Winters. But I digress. Second, “no one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition.” Start a blog take a hit. I, whether Craig believes it or not, have been to more than one blog and boy does one leave themselves out there in space for any fool to take exception with what ever is being espoused. Learn early and learn now, anything you do is open for criticism.

So, to the matter at hand. Being that I am older than most any three of the students in your class put together, and have seen all manner of teacher, I got to say, if you can’t learn from Craig, you are un-teachable. My remarks made were not aimed at him personally, but that is the way he usually takes my wisecracks. I was taking exception with the layout of the blog space, and not the way Craig got me there. But once there, I took the comments space as a forum to express my opinion on web matters in general. The two facts of 3 seconds to attention getting and three mouse clicks to an answer are true; stop and give your own web behaviors a good scrutiny. True, right. Well, when I got to the blog space the mouse roamed around the page and it seemed that I could click on the title and get somewhere and then the archive pull down, and the go to subscribe link and a couple others, more than I was looking for, and with my dementia, could handle. It was about here the machine locked. Yea, the machine probably needs a clean up, but I’ll fix it right after I get back from doing whatever else I’m interested in…Thus the reason for the Turret’s syndrome of screaming about keeping it simple. I have noticed that sometimes it is as creatively difficult to make something simple and works as difficult and doesn’t.

I am going to have to get up to date and figure out how to podcast or receive or what ever. I started to do that a year and two computer crashes ago. But I am in mid America and the twilight of my days. So I sometimes just don’t care. Remember who your audience will be. It is not most of who you think it will be. The computer folks are on the coasts, and the millions in between are out in the fields or factories and they just don’t care beyond the next beer. I live in a town of 900+ and know for a fact that I am the guru for web stuff, what a sad situation. So truly, keep it simple for their sake.

I got other opinions and I am sure that Craig wants me to keep them to myself. As this is getting real long I will. Hey, you got any?

Hi Mike:

Richard,
Good to hear from you. You always could just click on someting and it worked, not to sure what kind of black magic you are into.

Last year when I sent Craig my attempt at a podcast he though it was real stupid, mostly because it was. So we got to keep each other real, as they say.

Having fun here in Montana, you'all comming up this way?
Mike

OK Craig,
I went to the podcast place and Real Player came up on my machine. With the dialogue box of "You dont have the correct componets to hear this stuff" So I went to your Switch stuff and it says It can comvert the stream to something Real Player can play (MP3). Now how do I get the conversion to work?

craigp said...

Hi Mike,
Some people just TRY to do things the hard way, I guess. Maybe it's life in Montana. First, you should probably use the link that goes directly to the audio file. As the instructions say....right-click it and download it. Then, you can play it. The tell in your story is that it mentions converting the stream. It sounds like you are trying to convert the feed and play it Real player. Step two: DUMP REAL PLAYER. That is a bundle of worms.
Use (free) ITunes like the other 90% of the world that listens to podcasts. It is free and availble to mac/pc users. And, it's free. Otherwise, you probably want to run this file through WinAmp (pc only) or MusicMatch Jukebox, etc.
Did I mention....dump Real Player?

If you want to use the feed (subscription) then you need an aggregator. We know this as a podcatcher. There are many, and the subcription offers versions that you might use...other than the omnipotent ITunes. You would have to go get one of these critters and install it, then subscribe to the feed using that protocol.

This is set up as an M4a file, which Itunes will read as an .aac native format. The major difference being that this format carries audio and images. So, there are only two images in the first podcast...but wait until the next episode (after tax prep is done).

Audio only=podcast. Audio and still images=enhanced podcast, like a slide show. Video= videocast....coming in the summer.

Best,
Craig

PS Mike,
Switch is a very straight forward, wonderful little free conversion software. You browse to the file you want to convert and tell it where you want to store it, and what new format you want. In my case, I created an .rss file with that. That is just an xml file that is associated with the music file. The .rss is pushed through feedburner (feedburner.com) to create the actual feed that points to both the .rss file and the music file. Hence, the subscripion.

You can use Switch for all sorts of other music conversion....and it's free. There is a larger product that they sell you if you need more features.

Hello Mike,
Golly, you two are brutal! Sounds like a wonderful friendship.
And the Shelly Winters thing? I hope it is not during the Poseidon Adventure Era, because that would be just a little too creepy.
I, also, am in the realm of "way back" and at the 'three student' age. For goodness sake, I remembered who played Paladin on "Have Gun Will Travel". OUCH. Oh, it was Richard Boone.
Craig does make learning enjoyable and the atmosphere is certainly relaxed. I find myself returning for yet another semester of Polanowski's Tortures of the Darned!
Well, sir, take in a nice big breath of fresh air while we here in the Fres must be content to inhale pollen and exhaust fumes.
I remember when I could see the mountains nearly every day. Yep, old.
Until we meet again.
I am known as Coop.

Hi Edwin, I plan to use the podcast to talk about the graphics program at fcc. This will include student achievements, social events, curriculum changes, new hardware, new technologies, and more. The next episode will be a tour of the facility. Over the summer, I hope to figure out how to videocast.

Coop,
Paladin eh? Well I suppose we could get into one of those I saw, she saw things but let's us pass. But to show you what happens in the hinterlands, we were down at the post office a bit ago and the Postmistress stables her horses over in a field just across the gulch from here. We got to talking about them and of course the conversation turned to who rode what... well we got as far back as Hopalong Cassidy and ended up getting stumped by Wild Bill Hitchcock's horse from the TV's early 60's. Guess I will have to look that one up.

So's what is your take on the Mulitmedia stuff? Worth your time, or just a fad? It seems any fool with a microphone is becoming a pundent and now with iMus gone the field is wide open. I would think that the next trick for this stuff needs to be invented. Any thoughts?

Hi Nard, if we are going back to Palladin, maybe we should mention good old "Bat Masterson". Perhaps in a future podcast?
I think the next one will be about the room renovations instead.

Hi Nard,
Ok, you got me with, "What is the name of Wild Bill Hickok's horse?". My OCD got the better of me and I was on the hunt. Wild Bill, played by Guy Madison rode Buckshot. Jingles, played by Andy Devine rode Joker. Whew...I feel better now.
Here's a link to that 'valuable' information in case you are curious: http://thewildwest.org/interface/index.php?action=523

I, personally am completely fascinated with all the Multimedia stuff. I agree that there are many fools out there with microphone, and now, video camera in hand who seem to think we are interested in their opinions.Luckily, they can be cast from my sight with one click of the mouse.
The beauty I find with all the Multimedia stuff is that it exists at all. I am having so very much fun with it. I make little videos and send them on the net to my grandaughter(lives in Sacramento) who squeals with delight when she sees 'Gramma' on the screen.
I can see where a video podcast set to private (so it doesn't show my gramma silliness all over the earth) just may be the next step in an effort to keep us connected. She's only two so we can't actually have phone conversations, but she can understand video.
So, I am seeing the possibilites this podcasting stuff can have for me personally.
I can't imagine what the future holds for this field but I'm anxious to see what, as you said, the next trick is. Heck, I was in awe when saw my first color tv set! How wonderful for you to be living in two frontiers...the old west at your doorstep and outer space on your desktop. Now, in my book, that's Groovy!
When will I be able to see your venture into podcasting?
